“When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart.”
1 Samuel 10:9
There is a God who gives us another heart. A Father who transforms us with His own heart that we might believe His word and see every letter come to pass. Yes, there is One who can arrange for us to come to the end of ourselves and begin again as a new creation… to emerge as the very words God has spoken.
In the Bible, this is how we meet Saul, the first king of Israel. He comes across Samuel in search of his father’s donkeys, but his divine destiny is located instead of the animals. Samuel greets him with a prophecy that astounds a man who considers himself the least of his tribe and clan. We read in verse 10 that when Saul turned to walk away from this prophetic word, God gave him another heart. Wow. The name Saul means “prayed for.” So, we can claim and stand upon the promise that those we’ve prayed for will get another heart! The word of God plainly states this for us…hallelujah!
That’s beautiful and more than enough on its own, but I want to take a few steps further together and look at what the Bible presents for us in terms of a prophetic word. The verse directly after he’s given another heart says, “And all these signs came to pass that day.” Meaning everything Samuel prophesied to confirm the pathway of Saul’s anointing happened the very day it was released. I find it fascinating not only the sequence of these events, but that the moment a new heart was given, the prophecy came to pass. The impression that leaves upon my spirit is that when a prophecy is given, another heart is being offered to us as well. And sometimes we won’t see the fulfillment of what God has spoken without the exchange of our heart for His.
This passage of Scripture answers questions I’ve heard over the years about prophetic words people are holding onto but have not seen manifest. When the excitement of the word wears off and the natural still presents itself to us like the natural, we can sometimes sense a disappointment or discouragement setting in. And in the moments when the enemy is attacking every syllable and the word is sounding more impossible by the second, we forget that inside of us there is another heart beating. There is a new pulse of life and purpose in our veins. There is a new source of strength and courage. There is a new Commander in charge of this flesh and He is navigating the footsteps He has ordered. There is a new voice that takes over when we speak the revelations of God’s spirit. And there is a deeper level of intimacy that only a sacrificed heart could pump into our lives.
So, when you’re reading the Bible and letting the love of His word penetrate everything about you, don’t forget to take all that He is offering. Don’t close the Book and leave another heart on the table. Remember that sometimes the only thing that stands between His word and Amen is another heart.
And please don’t stop praying for those who need another heart, because our God is faithful to deliver!
